Waconia High School
Shakopee High School
The Waconia girls varsity soccer team opened up the season with a 1-1 tie in overtime against Shakopee High School. After a slow start that saw ball possession clearly in favor of Shakopee in the first half, the Waconia Girls Soccer team regrouped and tied the game early in the second half. Regaining control of the ball and utilizing possession and accurate passing, Waconia had plenty of chances to win the game before the final whistle blew in the OT period.
Shakopee took advantage of a rebound at the top of the 18 yard area, and scored a goal 24 minutes into the first half.
At the 18 minute mark of the second half, a solid team play that started with the goalkeeper, saw 12 passes in a row, and culminated with a powerful shot by Devin Breeggeman tied the score at 1.
Although both teams played hard through the rest of the game, including overtime, the game concluded with a 1-1 tie.
Up next for the Wildcats is a match at home on Tuesday September 1 at 7pm vs Providence Academy. This match will be a rematch of the first round of the playoffs last year and should be an exciting match.
