Game Recap

Under the scorching heat of the early afternoon, the Waconia Wildcats played an exciting but tiring match versus a quality opponent in New Prague. With temperatures in the high 80 degrees and the heat index pushing 95 degrees, neither team spent a lot of time on their warm-up, choosing instead to find shade and keep players hydrated and refreshed for the upcoming game.
The Wildcats jumped to an early lead when senior Kortney Genske secured a ball out of the midfield, spun away from pressure and placed a splitting pass to senior captain Megan Kirsch. Kirsch held the ball for a few seconds drawing the defense to her and then passed to senior Jaidyn Zapf who quickly played a fantastic through ball for freshman Haddy Falkman who out-ran the defender and finished masterfully as the New Prague keeper was coming out to intercept.
The remainder of the first half was played in an up-and-back style with Waconia keeping a large percentage of the ball possession, while New Prague utilized a counter attacking style to threaten the Wildcat defenders. When the game appeared to be headed into the break with a 1-0 lead, #2 McLoone for New Prague surprised the midfield and defense with her speed and drew a penalty kick with just 14 seconds to go in the half. While up to the challenge, junior goalkeeper Erin Larsen was not able to make the save and the game ended the first half with a 1-1 tie.
In the second half the Waconia girls team pressed high trying to end the stalemate, but great saves by the New Prague keeper, as well as the cross bar and posts kept the game tied at one and forced overtime.
1 minutes into the overtime period senior Megan Kirsch received a pass from Devin Breggeeman and managed to cross the ball to senior Kayla Kirsch. Just as Kirsch was about to celebrate her goal, the cross bar once again said no and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Up next for the Wildcats is an intense week of competition. Tuesday September 8 the team receives a visit from Chanhassen at 7pm at Bayview, and then Thursday the team plays their second conference game versus Mound Westonka also at 7pm.
