Waconia High School
Chaska High School
The Waconia Wildcats closed out the regular season with a convincing 2-0 win over AA Chaska on Thursday night.
Facing constant pressure from the entire Chaska team, the Wildcats relied on precission passing and possession with a purpose in order to avoid giving up goals early on in the match.
After a series of Chaska attacks down the Waconia left wing, the Wildcats were able to regain possession and counter at speed. Devin Breeggeemann was able to find Haddy Falkman down the right side and Falkman was able to play a ball into space that left Taylor Lange in a good crossing space. Her cross found Chloe Jaeger in the goal area but her shot was deflected out of bounds for a corner kick for the visiting Waconia.
McKenzie Ickert flighted the perfect ball and Haddy Falkman was able to knock it down in the area to the feet of senior Taylor Lange. Lange, the goal leader for Waconia this season was able to turn and fire the ball before any Chaska defender had a chance to react making the score 1-0 for Waconia.
Chaska had the chance to equalize just 7 minutes later, but the powerful shot was controlled by senior goalkeeper Kayli Thulin.
Although Chaska pressed hard in the final minutes of the half, the Wildcats were able to hold off the attack thanks to great play by the defensive line of Kohner, Reickhoff, Mereness, Grundhoffer and Stellick.
In the second half, the Wildcats maintained possession of the ball and in doing so, prevented Chaska from having a lot of scoring opportunities.
Two minutes into the half, Taylor Lange found a great pass from McKenzie Ickert to leave her one on one vs the Chaska goalkeeper but her shot missed the goalpost by mere inches. Four minutes later, sophomore Tess Johnson created space for herself at the top of the goal area but her shot was deflected by the goalkeeper.
At the 20th minute mark of the second half, a great pass by Devin Breeggeemann would Melissa Honnold alone with the goalkeeper but the Waconia forward was not able to touch the ball, as the goalkeeper tried to clear the ball, Chloe Jaeger was able to settle the ball and take a shot from 22 yards out to find the back of the goal and give Waconia a 2-0 final score.
Up next for the Wildcats is the first round of the Section tournament. Waconia, is surprisingly the #4 seed in section 2A after being ranked in the top 10 in the state most of the year. The Wildcats will host Jordan High School at Bayveiw Elementary in the first round of the section 2A tournament as they make a renewed bid to make it back to state.
