Congratulations to Waconia High School Juniors, Natalie Meath and Brady Compaan on being chosen as the 2019 WHS Minnesota State High School League ExCEL Award recipients! 

Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for high school juniors. Students who are active in fine arts and/or athletic activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens are eligible for the award. To be eligible for the ExCEL Award, students must: be a junior in high school; make satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements; participate in a League-sponsored fine arts and/or athletic activity; hold a leadership position in their school; work voluntarily in their community; and meet MSHSL General Eligibility Requirements.

  Natalie Meath, daughter of Amy and Bart Meath, has been active in Cross Country, Basketball, NHS and the International Club. In Cross Country, she is a three-year letter winner and a three- year Spotlight on Scholarship recipient. This past season, Natalie earned the responsibility of being the Cross Country “Pep Queen”. As the “Pep Queen” Natalie’s energetic and vibrant personality shined through as she led the team pep talks before races. During the winter season, Natalie participated three years in Basketball and has received a letter and the Spotlight on Scholarship each year.

Academically, Natalie has a remarkable 3.99 GPA and has been on the A Honor Roll throughout her High School career while taking numerous advanced placement classes! Natalie has also been an active member of the National Honor Society her 10th and 11th grade years. In addition, Natalie is also very involved with the International Club where she worked with three other students on a project that raised over $4,200 for UNICEF.

Natalie’s name is synonymous with community service logging over 200 volunteer hours with the majority of her time spent at Ridgeview hospital and at the Waconia United food shelf where she restocked supplies and served patients their meals. Other volunteer hours were spent at Waconia and St Joe’s Basketball Camps, local basketball tournaments, Relay for Life events, St. Joe’s “Rake-a-Thon”, the “Nickle Dickle Day” three-point and slam dunk contest, Feed My Starving Children, St. Joe’s “Boogie Blast’ Fundraiser, local kids run volunteer, swim meet event volunteer, nursing home visitor, and as a church youth volunteer. Thank you for your selfless acts of kindness Natalie!

  Brady Compaan, son of Korey and Misty Compaan, has been active in many of the Fine Art programs offered at Waconia High School including three years in Band as 1st Chair and three years in Jazz Band I and two years in Jazz Band II as the Lead Trombone. Brady has been a three-year participant in Pep Band, Honor Band, Show Band and a member of the All-State Band. As he enters his fourth year of participation as a member of the Waconia Marching Band, Brady has compiled numerous awards including: 2016 Rookie of the Year, 2018 Most Valuable Performer, 2017 & 2018 Marching Champion, 2018 Section Leader and 2018 Soloist.

In addition to his band accomplishments, Brady earned the role of Sebastian in the 2018 WHS Fall Musical, “The Little Mermaid” and was named Captain of our Knowledge Bowl team, all while maintaining a stellar 4.0 GPA and scoring a perfect 36 on the ACT!

Over the last three years Brady has also been extremely active volunteering in our community and worldwide. Through his church he has been a leader for elementary school students and helped with landscaping. Brady has been involved with Youth Group at his church, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, set up and take down for the Dan Sperry Magic Show, and also participated in a Mission Trip to Mexico where he was involved in building a home. Thank you Brady for your dedicated service!
