Wildcats News · Wildcats split with Chaska on all levels

In our last game before the holiday break, the Wildcats split with Chaska on all levels. 9th grade lost a heartbreaker 25-27 – had a shot to win it, and many shots throughout, and weren’t able to convert, but getting those shots is important! If you’re in a position to win, and take the shot, you’re going to win games. Bree Talton had 11, and Morgan Stock was a game-altering defender throughout the game.
B won 43-26 – in a game of runs, the Wildcats stepped up the defense in the second half, showed resiliency, and attacked well throughout in a quite physical game! Morgan Meyer had 14 and Lauren “Olga” Hansen had 13. This was a quality win against a physical team.
JV also pulled out a tight victory against a team of very, very tall players – I have rarely seen a JV team in the area with that many bigs, but our Wildcats refused to be intimidated……………………………………………
The varsity Wildcats took a 2 point lead on the first possession of the second half on an Olson 3, but then Chaska reeled off a 17-0 run to create some separation. In the first half, we held their post, a very talented and physical player, to no points through our helpside defense, but she got offensive rebounds and made very tough shots in the post in the second half. The biggest difference in the game was Chaska’s defense and finishing around the basket – they are physical and in good position all of the time, and we didn’t do a good job of being physical in response on offense – too many out-of-control shots were taken and blocked in the paint in the second half to make any kind of run, and we eventually fell 70-58. If we were to finish those shots in the paint, or draw fouls through physical, tough takes, we would’ve been in a very good position to keep it close / have a lead, but we let their physicality get to us in the second half.
Stats for rebounds, assists, etc. are still being tabulated, but scoring for Waconia were Olson with 12, Johnson and Stier with 10 each, Swanson with 9, and Salzer with 7.
Over the break, we will be competing in a Holiday tournament at Hill-Murray high school with the JV and Varsity. Our first game on the 26th is against Henry Sibley HS – JV plays at 1:15, Varsity at 3:00, and then we’ll stay and watch at least a half of basketball of the following game of Tartan vs. Mounds View, as we’ll play one of them the following day. We will have a shootaround at 10:40 AM on the 26th for JV/Varsity, the bus leaves at 11:40. The bus times and shootarounds will be announced the night after we know when we play the following days.
Have a safe and great holiday, rest up, and get hungry to go into the Holiday tournament with intensity and vigor!
