It was an amazing and memorable finish to senior night and the final game of the regular season as the Wildcats walked off the court as co-conference champions with a 58-55 buzzer beater win over Holy Family.
Waconia trailed all game until junior guard Tess Johnson hit a long 3 pointer with under 30 seconds left to tie the game 55-55. The Wildcats got a steal with 5 seconds left and took a timeout. Junior guard Tess Johnson drove the lane but the ball was knocked out of bounds off Holy Family with just 0.8 seconds remaining. Johnson passed the ball in to junior forward Natalie Meath in the corner and Meath fired up a three pointer and buried at the buzzer! Pandemonium ensued and the Wildcats share the Wright County Conference East Championship.
Waconia trailed 35-25 at halftime and was getting beaten badly on the boards. Rebounding turned around big time in the 2nd half as Waconia ended up winning the battle on the boards 37-32. The Cats held the Fire to just 20 points in the 2nd half. After making 15 shots in the first half the Fire made only 8 of their 25 attempts in the 2nd half. The Cats had an uncharacteristic shooting night making only 32.8% of their shots and only 24% of their threes. But they made the 3 at the buzzer and that’s what mattered most!
Tess Johnson filled up the stat sheet (and kept the Cats in the game during the first half) scoring 18 points, grabbing 9 rebounds (8 of them in the 2nd half) and pilfering 5 steals. She was the only Wildcat in double figures though Meath had 9, Courtney Freeberg and Audrey Swanson added 8 points. Freeberg also had 9 rebounds on a night to honor her as the Cats only senior.
Waconia finishes the regular season 19-7 and was awarded the #2 seed in the section 6AAA tournament. They will host #7 Dassel-Cokato on Wednesday at 7pm.
The JV Cats also won a close game 55-54 over Holy Family. The win means the JV team is also WCC East Champs as they lost only one game in the conference and that was a buzzer beater at Holy Family. Dani Dykstra led the way with 14 points. Sarah Cravens had 13 and Kiley Sazama contributed 10.
The 9th graders finished their season with an eye popping 21 and 1 record including an undefeated record in the conference (that’s yet another Wildcat conference championship in case you’ve lost track). Mackenzie Amundson had 14 points. Hallie Roitenberg, Grace Steffen, and Lauren Hanson helped a balanced scoring attack with 9 points a piece.
What a fantastic season by all three of our teams…but we’re not done yet!
