The Wildcats used a determined defense to pull away from the Orono Spartans early on Thursday night as they coasted to a 69-28 win that featured running time the final 9 minutes.
The Cats built a 37-15 halftime lead despite shooting only 28.5% in the first half. The hefty point total at the break was a result of 49 shot attempts and only 4 turnovers by the Cats. By comparison the Spartans made just 5 of their 28 first half attempts. (17.8%)
For the game Waconia went 26 for 72 (36.1%) while Orono was 10 for 47 (21.2%). The Spartans committed 23 turnovers and were outrebounded 35-23.
Four Wildcats scored in double figures led by Natalie Meath with 14. Addy Salzer scored 12. Jayda Lenz netted 11 points and Courtney Freeberg had a double/double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Cats improve to 13 and 5 on the season and 4 and 2 in the WCC East.
The JV Cats are becoming the “cardiac Cats” as they earned another very close win 55-53 in overtime. Overtime came courtesy of some buzzer beating heroics by Sarah Cravens. Down 2 with only 4 seconds left, Cravens caught a pass from Dani Dykstra and raced down the floor to make a layup at the buzzer. Dykstra had 22 points, Cravens 15, and Sami Brueggemeier added 13.
The 9th grade Cats earned a 65-43 win. Nora Bailey had a season high 22 points and was perfect at the free throw line. Hallie Roitenberg had 14 and Mackenzie Amundson added 12 points.
The varsity returns to action on Saturday against Monticello at STMA High School in The Breakdown “Community Clash”. The Wildcat girls play at 2:15 with the Wildcat boys playing the Magic immediately after.
