Another hot start led to a comfortable 75-48 win over Delano on Thursday night at the Waconia High School gym. The Cats drained 8 threes in the first half, building a 42-16 halftime lead.
Sophomore Sydni Olson was the hottest of a group of hot shooters burying five three pointers in the opening stanza. Natalie Meath added two triples.
Olson led five players in double figures with 15 points. Senior Courtney Freeberg scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Meath totaled 12 points. Tess Johnson and Addy Salzer added 10 points a piece. Ava Stier was the leading rebounder on the night with 8 boards. Johnson grabbed a game high 5 steals.
Waconia committed 15 turnovers compared to 27 by the Tigers. The Cats won the rebounding battle 36-25.
The Wildcat defense limited Delano to just 18% shooting from the floor in the first half.
Waconia is now 10 and 3 on the season.
The JV Cats pulled away in the 2nd half to earn a 51-34 win. Melissa Honnold had 18 points, Sami Brueggemeier added 13 points, and Hailey Williams nailed 4 three pointers for her 12 points.
Our freshman squad won the “Battle of the Westphals” (Delano’s 9th grade coach is Coach Westphal’s sister) 45-36. Grace Seim had 17 points to power the Cats past the Tigers.
All three teams return to action on Thursday at Hutchinson.
