Waconia got off to a great start in their first game of the Hoop City Classic leading the hometown Mitchell Kernels 13-2 in the games’ opening minutes, but someone put a lid on the basket after the opening 6 minutes. Despite getting numerous open shots, many of them in the paint, the Cats were unable to put the ball through the rim for more than 8 straight minutes. When Waconia finally scored again they were trailing and they would leave for the locker room down 24-18.
The other thing that haunted the Cats in the first half were uncharacteristic turnovers, and it was turnovers that would taint the opening minutes of the second half as well. Waconia had 5 turnovers in the first 3 minutes and Mitchell extended it’s lead to 10. The Cats would rally to tie the game at 33 but Waconia could not string together enough consecutive stops on defense to surpass the Kernels, falling 59-50.
Addy Salzer was the only Wildcat to reach double figures netting 13 points. Ava Stier and Tess Johnson were next with 8 points a piece. Stier was also the leading rebounder grabbing 7.
Waconia was just 8 for 28 from the floor in the first half including 1 for 7 behind the arc. The team was better in the 2nd half but still only managed to shoot 35% for the game. The Cats made only 2 threes compared to 6 for Mitchell which proved to be a critical difference.
The loss drops the Cats overall record to 7 and 3 on the season. They faced Canby, MN at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Saturday.
