It was a tough night for our Wildcats as they struggled on the offensive end and dealt with foul trouble all game in their 69-49 loss at Holy Family.
The Cats trailed 10-0 in the opening minutes as they had four turnovers and four missed shots on their first eight possessions. The Wildcats finally got on the scoreboard nearly 6 minutes into the game via a Courtney Freeberg free throw. Waconia wouldn’t make their first field goal of the game until 10 minutes of game time had passed. Despite their offensive woes the Cats were still able to keep the game competitive for most of the first half trailing 19-12 at one point. A late run by the Fire made the Wildcat deficit 17 at 30-13 when the two teams went to the locker room.
Waconia came out with far more intensity in the 2nd half and they were able to cut the Holy Family lead to 9 but that would be as close at the Cats would get.
Turnovers and missed shots were the biggest challenge for the Wildcats. The team had 25 turnovers and several were not forced by the Fire defense. They were simply ill advised passes or unforced travels.
When the Wildcats did get a shot off it only went in 29.8% of the time. The Wildcats were 13 for 46 on shots in the paint (28.2%).
The Cats were outscored by 20 points at the free throw line making 11 of their 16 attempts while Holy Family converted 31 of their 40 opportunities.
Waconia was given a great gift by the Delano Tigers as they knocked off Hutchinson tonight keeping the Cats just a game behind Hutch for first place in the WCC East. Delano entered the game just 2 and 17 on the season so it’s safe to characterize the outcome as an “upset”.
When Hutchinson comes to Waconia on Tuesday the Cats will have a chance to move into a tie for 1st place with a win on their home court.
The JV Cats crushed Holy Family and dominated from start to finish. The final score was 59-30.
