The Wildcats of Waconia extended their winning streak to 4 games in a row defeating a tough Monticello soccer team in non-conference match play.
Waconia looked to impose their tempo on the game early and had clear chances to open the score even while going against the wind in the first half. Monticello played the ball wide trying to stretch the Wildcat defense but the Gove-Stellick-Johnson-Shuster line would not yield.
Just when Monticello though they had a clear scoring chance, a quick counter attack involving Honnold, Breeggemann, Theis and Jaeger for Waconia left Jaeger 1 vs 3 in the Monticello goal area. Jaeger’s point scoring streak went up as her shot found the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Waconia looked to possess the ball in the second half and put pressure on the Monticello defense. With Paityn Miller and Jordan Grell stretching the field for the cats, space opened up in the center midfield and upon receiving a ball from Chloe Jaeger, senior Maddie Charbonneau unleashed a powerful shot from 35 yards out that hit the underside of the crossbar and gave the cats a 2-0 advantage early in the second half.
Monticello’s leading goal scorer Abi Frandsen looked to rally the home team and on a brilliant play out of a corner kick, Frandsen found enough space to fire a shot far side and best Isabelle Shuster to make the score 2-1. Shuster would come up big moments later making a heroic save, inside of 6 yards from her goal line to keep the score 2-1.
With the game going back and forth, Monticello’s Kamee Kitzman overlapped on the far side and crossed the ball creating a danger situation, but brilliant defensive play by Sydney Stellick kept the wildcats in the lead.
5 minutes from the end of the match, a shot from Miah Olson deflected of a Waconia defender and Shuster’s efforts could not prevent the game from being tied at 2.
In the overtime, Waconia looked to neutralize the speed of Frandsen and Kitzman, and counter in the first 5 minutes. Bryn Theis had a great opportunity but a diving save by Lauren Jones kept the match tied at 2.
With Chloe Jaeger drawing double teams from the Monticello defense, it would be Chanda Breeggemann on a corner kick who would decide the contest.
Breeggemann’s corner kick bent over the Monticello defense and made the final score 3-2 in favor of a the Wildcats.
Up next for Waconia is a road trip to Victoria Minnesota to take on Section 2 and Wright County Conference rivals Holy Family at 5pm.
Note – With 1 goal and 1 assist in today’s match, Chloe Jaeger extends her point scoring streak to 4 games and leads the Wildcats with 9 goals and 7 assists on the year.
