Playing under the lights of the Rockford High School Stadium, the Waconia Wildcats began their defense of the Wright County Conference title in 2018 with a victory over a hard working Rockford High School Girls Soccer Team.
The senior center mid trio of Madden, Charbonneau, Breeggemann, coupled with the potent attack of seniors Jaeger and Johnson established a very fast paced tempo early on in the game. tallying 4 shots in the first five minutes of play, it was obvious to the fans that Waconia was determined to go forward and try to earn the first goal of the match. Senior goalkeeper Madysin Rentz for Rockford did her best to stop all shots fired her way, but a perfectly played through ball by Breeggemann to Jaeger forced the Rockford defense to make a choice and when they pressure the senior forward for Waconia, Jaeger laid the ball off to Johnson whose right foot shot found the back of the net to open the score.
Rockford battled back and never stopped running in the first half, setting up fast paced soccer to entertain the fans in the stands. While the Wildcats dominated possession and shots in the first half, their efforts met a wall in Rentz who kept the Rockets in the game and kept the game 1-0 in favor of Waconia into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Wildcats moved the ball well from side to side on the field and shot the ball well, but once again Rentz was spectacular in her saves to keep the game 1-0.
Not to be denied in their scoring chances, in the 24th minute of the second half, a perfect pass by junior Melissa Honnold found senior winger Riley Bredeson open on the left side of the field, and her right footed rocket of a shot found the far side of the net to make the game 2-0 in favor of the visiting Wildcats.
Just five minutes later, a brilliant passing combination by Waconia left Honnold in great scoring position but she was fouled in the goal area by the Rockford defense granting the Cats a penalty kick. Senior Paige Madden, who played a brilliant first half distributing the ball, calmly stepped up to the ball and her perfectly placed shot hit the inside of the post and went into the back of the net to make the score 3-0.
Waconia would fire an additional 10 shots in the final 11 minutes of the game, but Rentz held firm and the final whistle saw the Wildcats improve to 1-1-1 in the season and start their Wright County Conference match play with a record of 1-0-0.
Up next for the Wildcats is AA rival Shakopee on Saturday afternoon at Shakopee High School.
Come cheer your wildcats to victory! Go Wildcats!
