The Wildcats concluded their play in the Hoop City Classic with a game at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Saturday. The Pentagon has become a favorite destination of big time D-I basketball teams and it’s also the home to the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the G League team for the Miami Heat.
Waconia was originally scheduled to play Sioux Falls Lincoln but the Patriots backed out on December 10th. The Canby Lancers had an opening in their schedule and were kind enough to fill in. Canby is a class A school 90 miles north of Sioux Falls on the SD/MN border.
The Cats pounced early and they built a 38-12 halftime advantage. Canby clawed back to cut the lead to as little as 18 at one point in the 2nd half, but Waconia would respond making the final score 68-38.
10 of the 13 players that saw action for the Wildcats scored led by Courtney Freeberg with 14 points. Tess Johnson (13), Jayda Lenz (11), and Addy Salzer (10) also put up double figures in points. Freeberg was one rebound shy of a double/double as she grabbed 9 rebounds.
While turnovers were again an issue for Waconia in the opening minutes of the game, the team tightened things up and made better decisions with the ball. The shooting troubles that were so prominent less than 24 hours earlier were no where to be seen as the Cats converted 56% of their shots in the 1st half and 42% of them for the game.
Waconia won the rebounding battle 46-33.
The Cats improve to 8 and 3 on the season. They return to action on Jan. 4th as they open WCC Eats play at Orono.
