The Wildcats built an early 18-6 lead and never looked back as they won their WCC East opener 87-61 over Orono.
Six players scored in double figures for the Wildcats and nine players scored in the game overall. Tess Johnson led the way with 16 points and 6 steals. Addy Salzer added 14 points. Sydni Olson scored 13 and grabbed a season high 6 rebounds. Ava Stier also had 13 with a team high 8 rebounds. Courtney Freeberg contributed 12 points and Natalie Meath netted 10.
The Cats shot 54% from the floor compared to 41% for the Spartans. Waconia outscored Orono in the paint 48-20 and out rebounded the Spartans 42-20. Waconia scored 31 points off Orono turnovers. The Spartans scored 12 points of Wildcat miscues. Waconia finished the night with 22 steals.
Waconia is now 9 and 3 overall.
The JV Cats turned a close game at halftime into a blowout as they stopped the Spartans 59-40. Melissa Honnold had 17 points, Sarah Cravens contributed 12, and Sami Brueggemeier added 11.
The 9th graders won 27-25 in dramatic fashion. With the game tied at 25 the Wildcats had the ball with less than 30 seconds left. Nora Bailey got the ball at the right block and powered up past an Orono defender to make the tough basket. She was also fouled on the play but managed to make what proved to be the game winning shot despite the contact. Grace Seim grabbed a key rebound after Orono missed an attempt to tie it and the freshman got a hard fought road win.
All three teams return to action at home on Thursday Jan. 10th when they host conference and section opponent Delano.
