A narrow 25-23 halftime lead ballooned to a 65-42 win for our Wildcats on Tuesday at Delano. Waconia made only 4 of their 21 shots inside the 3 point line in the opening 18 minutes (19%) and the Cats had 13 careless turnovers. Fortunately the team was 5 for 12 from the 3pt line. That solid shooting allowed them the lead at intermission.
The Cats came roaring out of the locker room in the 2nd half, hitting shots and getting stops on defense. Waconia held Delano to just six points in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd stanza going on a 20-6 run.
Waconia would make 9 of their 20 twos in (45%) and 6 of 12 threes (50%) in the second half. The Cats shot an impressive 46% from long range for the game.
Sophomore Sydni Olson was responsible for 7 of those 11 threes and she had a game high 23 points. Junior Tess Johnson added 14 points including several key steals for layups and two big first half three pointers.
Natalie Meath grabbed 10 rebounds. Freshman Ava Stier and Audrey Swanson hauled in 9 boards a piece.
The Wildcats improve to 15 and 5 on the season and 5 and 2 in the WCC East. They host Hutchinson on Friday in an important conference matchup.
The JV Cats also had a strong finish to the game after trailing at halftime. Waconia dominated the final 4 minutes to earn a 49-43 win. Dani Dykstra led the scoring with 16, Mel Honnold scored 13 in limited minutes and made 7 of her 8 free throws.
The freshman helped Coach Westphal go 2 and 0 against her sister (the Delano 9th grade coach) with a 53-26 win. Mackenzie Amundson led a balanced scoring attack with 13, Hallie Roitenberg had 12, Lauren Hanson threw in 9, and Nora Bailey added 8.
