Waconia Wildcats girls soccer traveled to Shakopee on Saturday for a tough non-conference match with the Shakopee Sabers. Continuing their momentum from their match versus Rockford, Waconia looked to possess the ball early and attack the Shakopee defense with quality through balls into the space. The home team counter by playing the ball wide and launching the ball over the top of the Waconia defense when ever possible.
Senior captain Tess Johnson had the first chance to score in the game when a perfect cross from fellow senior captain Chloe Jaeger found her at the top of the goal area, but the Sabers goalkeeper was able to deflect the ball for a corner kick.
As the game progressed in the first half, both teams had clear chances to open the score. Shakopee’s player of the match Kori Mills received a great pas sand turned to shoot, but could not celebrate a goal thanks to the heoric efforts of Waconia senior goalkeeper Isabelle Shuster who smothered the ball and kept the score 0-0 to end the half.
In the second half, Waconia settled into possession and passing the ball and their efforts were rewarded when in the 3rd minute of play a perfect free kick by Chanda Breeggemann from 35 yards out found the back of the net giving the visiting Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Although Waconia looked to retain possession, Shakopee intensified the pressure and created multiple shot opportunities, highlighting Shuster’s ability to handle difficult shots. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Brooke Davies was able to jump on a rebound and tie the game with 10 minutes to go in the second half.
The remainder of the game saw both teams shoot often on goal and both goalkeepers become key players in the game. Waconia had a clear chance to win the game when a shot by junior captain Chanda Breeggemann hit the goal post and the follow up rebound went wide of the net.
As the game came to an end, Waconia’s record on the season moved to 1-1-2.
Up next for Waconia is Senior Night on Tuesday September 10 at 5pm at Waconia High School. Come out and cheer your Wildcats to victory!
